Featured Hybridizer - Brenda Bautista

Brenda, it's always a pleasure to catch up with you and have a virtual look through all of your beautiful crosses. I'd love to have everyone get acquainted with your garden, your never-ending projects, and your methods of coming up with such beauties. Here's a few questions that I think will be fascinating for our readers.

What year did you start growing Brugmansia?

I began growing Brugmansia in 1994. A friend of mine gave me starts of a yellow, white, and a pink one that his father was growing. These varieties had......(read on)

Fungus in Brugmansia: Stem Rot/Stem Blight - Written by Delisa Harvey

Fungus in Brugmansia: Stem Rot/Stem Blight by host

Our brugmansia are growing and soon it will be fall and we will want to share cuttings.  Fusarium and Phomopsis are two of the most devastating fungal invaders of brugmansia.  There are other fungal disease that mimics the signs of Fusarium and Phomopsis such as Pythium Stem Rot.  The only way to have a sure diagnosis of the disease is a report from a lab with disease diagnosis.  The reports will contain information about how to treat the diseased brugmansia.

One way that hybridizers of brugmansia are trying to decrease the incidence of stem rot is to breed brugmansia for stem rot resistance.  Many hybridizers are now crossing brugmansia without using Brugmansia suaveolens, which has been proven to be the most likely type of brugmansia that will contract stem rot.  Unfortunately, Brugmansia suaveolens is the most perfumed of all the Brugmansia species and the crossing for disease resistance is eliminating or reducing the intoxicating smell of the suaveolens species.

Adding an image to a discussion post

Adding an image to a pod discussion is easier than you think.  The first step is to make sure you select "Add Reply".  By default the "Quick Reply" editor is displayed and you must switch to the full text editor in "Add Reply" to insert images.

Once you are in the full editor, you will see an attachement bar at the bottom. Click on the small yellow button on the far right of the bar to access the attachment options.

You will now see tools to allow you to select and upload image files from your computer.

Once files are uploaded they will appear under "My Files".  To insert one of your files in your discussion post, just click on the small green arrow and your file will be inserted.

Now wasn't that easy?!

Coming Soon to iBrugs!

We have lots of exciting things planned for the future of the international brugmansia Society.  One of the most exciting will be our new full color quarterly journal.  The first edition of this exciting new publication will go to print in early July and will be mailed out to all premium members.

Another major project that is already in the works is our new searchable, named cultivar database.  This database is being custom built exclusively for iBrugs. In order to have the most functional database possible, we visited exisiting plant databases around the world, identifying the best features to incorporate into the iBrugs database.  While we are a couple of months away from the offical launch, we are working hard to maintain the most up-to-date lists of named Brugmansia cultivars available anywhere.

Of course every week you will find more and more content being added to iBrugs.  We are also tweeking the iBrugs.com website to create a more robust user experience for everyone.

Check back often, things will always be changing!

Welcome to iBrugs!

Welcome to iBrugs.com, the home of the International Brugmansia Society.  iBrugs was formed by a group of experienced Brugmansia growers who saw the need for an organization with a strong focus on education.  They knew that it would be important for this organization to appeal to experienced growers, hybridizers, and researchers along with novice and home gardeners alike.  The public exchange of information along with member fellowship were noted as a couple of top priorities. With that in mind, the International Brugmansia Society was formed and iBrugs.com evolved. In keeping with our goal to promote public interest in Brugmansia, basic membership in the International Brugmansia Society is free to all.

Brugmansia “Painted Lady” by RJ

Brugmansia  “Painted Lady”

There are few Brugmansia which can compare to the Larger Than Life presence of Painted Lady. A rich pink/red that triumphs richness and depth, Bonnie Vaughn must've thought she'd been touched by an angel when she saw this bloom for the first time.

This treasure is a must have for any Brugmansia grower, as it's striking beauty is beyond compare. From the first glance at a distance, hanging elegantly on a sturdy, stately tree, this one can't be ignored, as it's intense carmine red presence makes itself known even at great distances.
