One more Angel Trumpet heads to my watch zone

I have lots of beautiful yellow and orange Angel Trumpets in my watch zone and now one more will join the group.  The cross is Brugmansia ('Color Point' x 'Angels Flight' x 'Langenbuscher Garten'.

colorpointxangelsflightxlangenbuschergarten.jpgThe blooms are large and beautiful in form.  One feature that sets these blooms apart from others is the two-tone coloration of the corolla skirt.  As you can see in the photo below, the ribs are much darker than the mid section.  This is especially noticeable on the outside of the bloom.

colorpointxangelsflightxlangenbuschergarten-2.jpgThis seedling is thriving in our current sauna like weather and the blooms hold up well in the heat.

colorpointxangelsflightxlangenbuschergarten-3.jpgI'm encouraged that the two-tone coloration has remained during the first two bloom cycles.  Often when you are observing a new brugmansia seedling over a period of time, the bloom color and form will evolve as the seedling matures. That is why I have a lengthy trial or watch period for promising new Angel Trumpet seedlings, before deciding if they are worthy of being named and registered.

I have a bunch more seedlings from this cross that have yet to bloom, so stay tuned to see if any others are worthy of watching.

Very nice, and looks like it has a great super wide spreading corolla. That would look very nice in a big flush!

This makes me wonder what causes a Brug to have this characteristic. Especially since this pattern is almost exactly reverse of what Morelia does.

The CP x AF seedling is a single orange that strongly resembles Color Point.  I've been on the fence about naming and registering it.  I'll post a photo when I go in to my office tonight.

It sure is a beauty! I was wondering, Fred, how do most yellows, (like Charles Grimaldi, etc) hold up in your climate?

Here's a photo of the mama, Color Point x Angels Flight.  I do not plan to register it as I have so many better orange brugs in my watch zone now.

Most do well, but you really have to be on the lookout for fungal problems during our hot and muggy summers.  I used to have Charles Grimaldi and Whiskers growing in my yard, but lost them during a freeze a couple years ago.

I had a giant Inca Sun and Delta Dawn in my yard that both succumbed to fungal problems.

Disease resistence is one of my hybridizing goals and I'm growing out lots of yellow seedlings and keeping the healthiest for future breeding.

Your brugs rekindled my love for growing them! I like your hybridizing mantra!

Thanks Fred for the photo - looks a little bit like Apricot Riese.

Charles Grimaldi does very well in hotter climates as long as the water supply does not run out. I have seen it several times in Spain and the Canary Islands.

Disease resistance is for sure a goal to go for!
